Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara has been ruled out of Spain’s 2014 World Cup squad due to a knee injury, the Bundesliga club have confirmed on their official website.
Alcantara, who has been capped five times by Spain, was originally named in Spain’s 30-man provisional squad on Monday, but Bayern confirmed that the 23-year-old will miss Saturday’s German Cup final against Borussia Dortmund and the FIFA World Cup 2014 tournament this summer.
Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: “This is bitter for Thiago and I feel sorry for him. A young player, who wanted to come back at the World Cup and suddenly his dreams are burst. We will take care of him now and make sure he is fit at the start of the season.”
The 2010 World Cup holders Spain are in Group B along with 2010 finalist the Netherlands, Chile and Australia.
