Manchester United have reportedly placed emphasis on signing Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, according to Football Italia.
The Red Devils are weighing up a swoop for the Serbia international as an alternative to Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong.
United are preparing a back-up option in the event that the club fail to sign the Dutchman this summer.
The report adds that the 20-time English champions have been pursuing the Netherlands international since the beginning of the 2022 summer transfer window but the Premier League giants still haven’t landed him.
Football Italia goes on to claim that Erik ten Hag’s side have earmarked Milinkovic-Savic as a potential option who could improve the midfield department.
Milinkovic-Savic has been a long-term target for United after the club first showed an interest in the Serbian a few years ago.
However, the 27-year-old could be reluctant to move to Old Trafford seeing as the Red Devils failed to qualify for the Champions League.
Milinkovic-Savic has scored 11 goals and registered 11 assists in 37 matches in Serie A last term.
