Leeds United could face an awkward situation with Lukas Nmecha this January, as the striker grows increasingly unsettled by his lack of game time under Daniel Farke.

Reports from Football Insider suggest the German forward is weighing up a winter departure unless his circumstances change soon. Nmecha joined Elland Road on a free transfer following his release from VfL Wolfsburg last year, arriving with a solid scoring pedigree. However, he has since been overshadowed by fellow free-signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has firmly established himself as Farke’s preferred number nine.

Limited Minutes Fuel Uncertainty

Last term, Nmecha made 31 Premier League appearances but started only ten, netting six goals as Leeds settled for a mid-table finish. Having signed a modest two-year deal upon arrival, he is already into the closing stages of his contract, adding urgency to his situation.

This campaign has been even tougher, with Nmecha yet to start a single league fixture, restricted instead to two outings in the EFL Cup. Following Leeds’ cup exit to Chelsea this week, those minutes have effectively dried up, strengthening the case for a January move should things remain unchanged.

Leeds Could Explore the Market

Interestingly, Wrexham reportedly enquired about Nmecha’s availability last summer, but Leeds were reluctant to let him go. Should that stance hold into January, a free departure next summer looks increasingly plausible.

Leeds had also explored strengthening their forward line before the transfer deadline, with names like Zian Flemming and Conrad Harder linked, though both ultimately moved elsewhere — to Ipswich Town and Strasbourg respectively.

Personally, this looks like a situation Leeds should have anticipated. Allowing a promising striker’s development to stagnate rarely ends well, and if Farke’s side don’t find him minutes soon, they risk losing a talented forward for nothing come summer.
