Manchester United Eye Alejandro Balde but Face Transfer Competition

Manchester United are reportedly set to revisit their interest in Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde ahead of the January transfer window, although rival clubs could complicate any deal, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Why United Need a Left-Back

United viewed left-back as a problem area last summer but did not pursue an alternative once Lewis Hall stayed at Newcastle. That decision looks costly now. Luke Shaw is battling injury, while Patrick Dorgu is increasingly seen as an attacking option. Michael Carrick even had to use centre-back Ayden Heaven at left-back against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

Balde Struggling for Minutes at Barcelona

The 22-year-old has slipped down Hansi Flick’s pecking order and has played just 12 minutes this season. Joao Cancelo and Xavi Espart are ahead of him, with Espart recently committing to a new deal. Flick has praised Balde’s attitude but admitted the situation is tough.

Transfer Obstacles for United

Romano says United made contact previously but never submitted an offer. Barcelona want a permanent sale rather than a loan, while the fee and Balde’s wages are further hurdles. Agent Jorge Mendes also has strong links with several potential suitors.

Our Opinion

Balde ticks plenty of boxes: a natural left-back, young enough to improve and already proven at elite level. His need for regular football could work in United’s favour. Even so, Barcelona have little reason to accept a bargain for a player under contract, and the financial demands may be considerable. A January move looks far from simple, with 2027 possibly offering a better opening.
