Liverpool Eye €55m Permanent Deal for Barcelona Loanee Ronald Araujo

Liverpool are reportedly preparing to trigger the €55 million option to buy Ronald Araujo, according to Fichajes. The 27-year-old Uruguayan has become a regular in Andoni Iraola’s side since joining on loan from Barcelona.

Araujo Reluctant to Return to Barcelona

Araujo is said to be unwilling to go back to the Camp Nou while Hansi Flick is in charge. He joined Barcelona in 2018 and broke into the first team in 2020, but injuries and reduced game time under Flick led to the loan switch with an option to buy.

How Has Araujo Performed at Liverpool?

The centre-back has played around 800 minutes across 12 appearances, contributing to three goals. Although he prefers a central role, Iraola has used him at right-back, where his tackling and recoveries have been valuable.

He played the full 90 minutes in the 2-0 win over Brighton, a clean sheet that drew praise from captain Virgil van Dijk for his intensity. That display came after he had been withdrawn at half-time in his previous two outings.

Liverpool Transfer Plans and Payment Schedule

Reports suggest the Reds will review the payment structure in November and December. Completing the deal early would help them avoid a summer bidding contest and settle matters before the 2027 pre-season.

Our Take

Araujo’s willingness to adapt to a new position is a big plus, and his versatility could prove vital given the defensive departures. Barcelona may struggle to keep a player who does not want to return, so a permanent move looks increasingly likely. Still, €55 million is a sizeable fee for a defender with a patchy injury record, and Liverpool will want to see consistency before committing.
