Atletico Madrid Eye €30m Loan-to-Buy Deal for Arsenal’s Mikel Merino

Atletico Weigh Up January Move

Atletico Madrid are reportedly considering a January approach for Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino. According to Fichajes, Diego Simeone’s side are exploring a loan deal with an option to buy at €30 million. No formal offer has been made yet.

Merino’s Limited Arsenal Minutes

The 30-year-old Spain international has struggled for game time this season. He has played just 183 minutes across nine Premier League appearances, starting once, without a goal or assist. In the Champions League, he has featured three times for 135 minutes. Arsenal signed him from Real Sociedad for €37.5 million in August 2024, and his contract runs until June 2028.

Why Simeone Could Benefit

Merino can play as a defensive midfielder, an interior or further forward, giving Atletico tactical flexibility. His six seasons at Real Sociedad brought 190 La Liga appearances and 20 goals, so the adjustment would be minimal. A loan would let Atletico assess him before committing significant funds.

Arsenal Hold the Cards

With his deal running to 2028, Arsenal are under no pressure to sell or loan. Any departure would depend on the Gunners being comfortable with their midfield cover, and the €30 million figure remains a reported framework rather than an agreed valuation.

Our Take

The structure looks sensible for Atletico, reducing risk on an older player. Arsenal, though, should be wary of losing depth midway through a season. Ultimately, Merino’s own desire for regular football ahead of international commitments may prove decisive.
