Selecting the top five goals from the World Cup 2014 group stage was not an easy task, but here (chronological order) is our pick of the best goals so far from the group stage games.
Robin Van Persie (Netherlands) vs Spain
June 13 in Salvador
Van Persie’s stunning header against the defending champions Spain. His outstanding diving effort went viral immediately after the goal was scored by the 30-year-old striker.
“It is the best goal of my career,” the Dutchman said. “It was a brilliant goal, even I have to say that.”
Tim Cahill (Australia) vs Netherlands
June 18 in Porto Alegre
Cahill’s stunning volley on a 40 yarder long ball, instantly became him a leading contender to be one of the best five goals of this World Cup.
Jermaine Jones (USA) vs Portugal
June 23 in Manaus
Jones’s excellent strike, who took the ball after a corner (outside the box) and banged perfectly into the extreme corner of the Portuguese net.
Xherdan Shaqiri (Switzerland) vs Honduras
June 25 in Manaus
Swiss midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri waltzed the ball rolling against Honduras and scores a stunning goal into the top corner of the Honduras net in 6 minutes.
Lionel Messi (Argentina) vs Nigeria
June 25 in Porto Alegre
Messi scores a brilliant double to help his nation on top of the group. The 27-year-old talisman twisted a beautiful free-kick to put Argentina 2-1 up versus Nigeria just before the half-time.
For me the best one is from Netherlands captain Van Persie! Let us know your views, which one is your favourite, here below at comment section.
