Tottenham Lead Manchester United in Race for Atletico Madrid Winger Giuliano Simeone
Tottenham are reportedly ahead of Manchester United in the chase for Atletico Madrid’s Giuliano Simeone, with Roberto De Zerbi said to be driving the interest ahead of the January window.
Why Spurs Are Pushing for Simeone
According to Fichajes, Spurs are viewed as front-runners for the 23-year-old Argentina international. He has made 114 appearances for Atletico since breaking through in 2024/25, following loan spells at Real Zaragoza and Alaves. Playing under his father, Diego Simeone, he has become a regular in a side that demands high standards.
Spurs have struggled for goals this season, and a striker remains their priority. Even so, De Zerbi is believed to see Simeone’s intensity and ability to break defensive lines as a useful addition on the flanks, despite the arrivals of Savio and the return to fitness of Mohammed Kudus.
Manchester United Monitoring the Situation
United have also been linked, with scouts reportedly watching him closely, including in Atletico’s 2-0 win over the Red Devils on Tuesday. However, there appears to be little urgency to add another wide attacker at Old Trafford right now.
Atletico Madrid Stance and Release Clause
The biggest obstacle is Simeone’s contract, which runs until 2030 and reportedly carries a €500 million release clause. Atletico are not expected to entertain offers in January unless a bid vastly exceeds their valuation.
Our Take
A January move looks unlikely given the price tag and Atletico’s firm position. Simeone does suit De Zerbi’s high-tempo approach, though, and this could easily resurface in the summer, when Spurs’ need for a striker may also be clearer.
