Newcastle United are still keeping tabs on Luka Sucic, with Sky Sports Netherlands reporting that the Real Sociedad midfielder remains on their shortlist. The Magpies first monitored the Croatia international last summer, and his bright start to the season has kept him firmly in the picture.

Jaissle Link Could Prove Key

Matthias Jaissle worked with Sucic at Red Bull Salzburg, so the Newcastle head coach knows exactly what the 24-year-old offers. That familiarity could prove decisive if the club push for a move next summer.

Sucic has scored three goals in eight appearances this term. He can play as a number ten, as a striker or in a deeper role, and that flexibility would suit Jaissle’s squad-building plans.

€60 Million Release Clause a Hurdle

Any deal will be costly. Sucic’s release clause sits at around €60 million, and Real Sociedad have little incentive to negotiate while they regard him as an important part of their side. Borussia Dortmund have also monitored him previously, so competition may emerge.

Our Take

The move makes sense on paper. Newcastle have no shortage of physical midfielders, but Sucic would add movement, technical quality and a knack for arriving in dangerous areas.

The fee is the sticking point, though. Newcastle will need to be convinced he can become a long-term starter rather than a rotation option at that price. If Jaissle is sure he can thrive in the Premier League, the Magpies could be a club to watch when the summer window opens.
