Manchester United Assess Lisandro Martinez Replacements Amid Contract Doubts

Manchester United have begun scouting potential successors to Lisandro Martinez, according to Football Insider, as doubts grow over the Argentine’s future at Old Trafford.

Martinez Contract Talks Put on Hold

The 28-year-old has struggled for consistency this season, and his public criticism of the club’s hierarchy has reportedly led United to pause discussions over a new deal. With less than a year left on his current contract, the recruitment department is already carrying out due diligence on alternative centre-backs rather than waiting for the situation to become more urgent.

Martinez arrived from Ajax in 2022 for £57 million.

Scrutiny Over Defensive Errors

Michael Carrick is expected to reshape his defensive options, and Martinez’s costly mistakes against Tottenham, Manchester City and Ipswich have heightened scrutiny. He still started the 1-1 draw with Leeds United, largely because United lack convincing alternatives.

His comments after the defeat to Atletico Madrid, questioning the club’s investment in the squad, have reportedly left United reconsidering their plans for him.

Why a Fresh Start Could Make Sense

In our view, moving on could suit all parties if the right replacement is found. United need a dependable, physically commanding leader at the back, and reputation alone should not secure a place in the side.

There is also a financial angle. With his deal running down, United risk losing a high-value asset without recouping a meaningful fee. Selling while interest remains could also give Carrick greater squad flexibility.

That said, a strong run of form could quickly change the picture for the 2022 World Cup winner.
