Chelsea lead race for Sporting CP star Ousmane Diomande

Chelsea are reportedly in pole position to secure the signing of Sporting CP’s highly-rated centre-back Ousmane Diomande. The 21-year-old Ivorian has attracted interest from several top clubs, including Arsenal and Manchester United, following his stellar performances in Portugal.

A Rising Star in Defence

Diomande has quickly established himself as a defensive powerhouse at Sporting CP since joining from FC Midtjylland in early 2023. Standing at 6ft 3in, his commanding physical presence, aerial strength, and exceptional defensive awareness have made him a key player for the Portuguese outfit.

Chelsea’s need for defensive reinforcements could make Diomande an ideal fit, especially with Axel Disasi potentially leaving Stamford Bridge. Arsenal, while keen on the young defender, may struggle to offer him a starting role with Gabriel and William Saliba already solidifying their positions.

Transfer Details

Sporting CP has set Diomande’s release clause at a hefty €80 million, but reports suggest a bid of €50-€60 million might be enough to secure his services. Chelsea’s emphasis on signing top young talent aligns perfectly with Diomande’s profile, making them favourites in the race.

A Potential London Move

Both Chelsea and Arsenal could provide Diomande with a move to London, but Chelsea’s urgency for a new defender and their willingness to prioritise him may tip the scales in their favour. Whether Sporting will lower their demands or hold firm on the release clause remains to be seen.
