Chelsea are reportedly plotting a move for Barcelona’s rising defensive talent, 19-year-old Xavi Espart, with the Blues eyeing a deal ahead of next summer’s transfer window.

Spanish outlet Fichajes claims the teenager is “starting to attract attention due to his emergence” in Barcelona’s senior setup, and his contract situation has only sharpened interest from suitors across Europe.

The report notes Espart currently holds a release clause of just €20 million, a figure that makes him extremely attractive given his versatility across the backline. However, Barcelona are said to be working on a renewal that would push that clause up to a substantial €150 million, potentially pricing out interested parties.

A Rapid Rise Through La Masia

Born and raised in Barcelona, Espart has followed the classic La Masia pathway, breaking into Hansi Flick’s first-team plans during the second half of last season. He’s continued that progress into 2026/27, racking up five La Liga appearances, a goal and two assists in 440 minutes on the pitch. Unsurprisingly, several top European clubs are now monitoring the youngster closely.

Chelsea’s interest fits a broader pattern at Stamford Bridge. My view? A €20 million release clause for a player of Espart’s profile would represent shrewd business, and it’s easy to see why Chelsea are keen to move before Barcelona tie him down.
